The certification of professional competences

The CERTing Advanced certification represents the highest Italian system of voluntary certification of the professional competences of engineers, promoted by the National Council of Engineers (CNI).

Unlike the professional qualification, which allows the exercise of the profession, the purpose of the CERTing certification is to attest — through an independent and periodically updated assessment — the level of the competences actually acquired over the course of professional activity.

The certification process does not assess the curriculum alone, but examines the experience gained, the quality of the assignments carried out, continuous professional development, the responsibilities assumed, the design methodologies adopted and the ability to tackle complex technical problems.

The certification is issued exclusively following a rigorous process of documentary assessment and technical interview conducted by qualified professionals.

The certified competences

International recognition

In June 2026 CERTing and the Engineering Council of the United Kingdom signed an Admissions Pathways Agreement, which creates a simplified recognition pathway between the CERTing Advanced certification and the Chartered Engineer (CEng) professional registration of the United Kingdom. The agreement is based on the alignment of the competence assessment systems and reduces duplication in the assessment procedures, while maintaining the standards required by the two bodies.

For CERTing Advanced certified professionals this represents an important opportunity for the international recognition of their competences and facilitates professional mobility and collaboration with technical organisations operating in the British and international context. It should however be noted that the agreement does not entail automatic recognition of the CEng title, but offers a more efficient route towards such recognition, in compliance with the requirements set by the Engineering Council and the competent professional institutions.
